Which one is better? In deciding between the two it usually comes down to aesthetics, as the cost is similar. Do you prefer the amazing randomness and unpredicable patterns of a natural stone? Or do you prefer the sleek consistency of a a man made quartz?

Granite or more correctly natural stone is quarried from the earth as enormous blocks of stone. Then it is processed by being cut and polished into slabs. Each slab of stone will have it's own unique pattern and properties depending on how mother nature created it. Stone is porous and requires a sealer.

Quartz or more correctly engineered stone is a man made product comprised of 93% crushed quartz and 7% resins. It is non-porous and does not require a sealer. However enginerred stone can be succeptible to fading if exposed to direct sunlight. It is also not recommended for fireplace surrounds.

If you are considering a natural stone, it is important to consider the natural properties of the stone. Some natural stone is prone to etching, cracking or flaking; some are very soft and others are extremley hard.
